Eyre began knitting in Spring 2001 after buying an old knitting
machine. She taught herself the basics and soon created her first
'Camelia' sweater which she still makes today. She began collecting
vintage knitting patterns from the 30's and 40's and started to
learn the stitches and techniques used at that time in order to
emulate the style and shape. By that Autumn she was hand making
pieces for a group of friends and contacts who loved the hand made
feel of the pieces.
In January 2002 she received a Prince's Trust grant
to buy a more up to date machine and began designing pieces under
the name of 'Chixwear' which were sold to her ever growing group
of private customers.
In April 2002 she met British designer Elspeth Gibson
at the Fashion Awareness Direct competition which she was judging.
She liked the sweater Constance was wearing and asked her to design
some pieces. This she did over two seasons but stopped to concentrate
on setting up her own label - Constance Eyre. With this she wanted
to produce high quality, sophisticated and wearable pieces of knitwear
with a vintage feel which could be sold to a wider market through
various boutiques.
All her pieces are made in the UK, many of which she
still hand makes herself.
